May 14, 2017 - Finally, we have big games using the Metal API.:) EDIT: the list can't be exhaustive. All upcoming games from Feral, Aspyr and those that run. Metal is the foundation for accelerated graphics and compute on Apple platforms, enabling your apps and games to tap into the incredible power of the GPU. Get introduced to essential Metal capabilities and understand the recommended approach for transitioning OpenGL-based apps onto the Metal API.
Finally, we have big games using the Metal API. EDIT: the list can't be exhaustive. All upcoming games from Feral, Aspyr and those that run on UE4 and Unity 5 will most likely use Metal. I grouped games according to the developers who actually did the porting to Metal.
I missed this comparison from a French website. Consider also that Metal is capped at 60 fps! Metal and Feral are both great.
Interestingly, the Mac is slightly behind at the highest resolution. It shows that Metal really helps the CPU, but that drivers have room from optimisation. With openGL, result used to be the opposite, with macOS being far far behind at low resolution, due to driver and OpenGL overhead causing the GPU to wait on the CPU. Only at very high resolution, where the CPU isn't the limiting factor, did performance get closer to Windows levels.

There’s a sense in which Apple have been caught out by the explosion in gaming over the last several years, and I think they were pretty slow to realise there was a market to be tapped here.
Now that they’ve apparently switched their focus from pro users to ‘ordinary’ consumers, they’ve got some catching up to do. It’s been announced that the next update of MacOS will have support for external graphics cards via Thunderbolt, so maybe they’ve come to their senses.
None of this lets Epic off the hook, when their slow response and absence of communication over the many, many issues faced by Mac users has been really dispiriting. I would like to have seen some acknowledgement of the fact that the game, which once ran acceptably on a fairly high-end Mac, has now become all but unplayable, especially with the shopping cart bug.
Because it’s not true, the hardware in Macs is not at all different from windows machines. They have intel CPUs, and AMD GPUs. The OS is FreeBSD based which is similar to Linux, since both are Unix-based. Most games are not developed for Macs because the hardware is non-customizable and because most of the people who get Macs don’t game (or are console gamers at least). Windows has been the platform for gaming for a long time.
Nonetheless, the game doesn’t run poorly on MacOS because “Macs are built for everything but gaming” but rather because Epic has focused the vast majority of their development to all of the other platforms. It’s not easier to optimize gaming for iOS vs MacOS, if anything it’s probably easier to optimize for Mac than iOS because on Mac you have way more control over the hardware/ i.e. The system APIs have a lot lower level access. Developing for PCs is a lot different than mobile development.
